What is AV Over IP system, the “same“ and “different“ of traditional AV and IP

Release date:2021-10-11 Source:BeingHD Pageviews:-

AV over IP system stands for "Audio and Video Technology Based on Internet Protocol". Essentially, it is the transmission of audio and video data via LAN, WAN or the Internet. Different from the traditional AV environment that we often say, AV over IP system (also known as AV/IP) refers to the use of standard network equipment to transmit and switch video and audio signals.

The concept of "IP video" has existed for a long time. From Internet-based live or on-demand video streaming to professional video transmission in radio and television production, IP video can be said to encompass a wide range of concepts. In the past few years, it has become popular to gradually use IP architecture to replace the traditional AV architecture. In applications in various fields, IP distribution has long been accepted and respected by users. Although at present, some people still have some resistance to the application of IP in the AV environment, our industry trend is that, for more people, IP is already familiar.

The "same" and "different" of traditional AV and IP

Basically, the main elements in the AV environment have not changed much. The traditional audio and video architecture mainly involves the expansion and conversion of audio and video signals. The goal of the AV architecture system is to allow users to see the video signal at their own location and hear the voice information through the sound system. To achieve this goal, the signal source needs to be captured, moved, switched, and displayed. The user interface for changing the signal source can be a button on a hardware device, which is a digital interface based on computer technology.

In the two AV methods, the main structure is similar. In the IP method, the audio and video signal transmitter has been changed to an encoder, the audio and video signal receiver has been turned into a decoder, and the audio and video switcher (we often call the video matrix switcher) has become the standard "IP Switch", just like our computers are connected in the office.

The goal of many AV products and services is to ensure that the best video and sound quality can be obtained when the signal source is moved and switched. Other performance factors include fast switching capabilities and low latency throughout the process. In addition, some AV equipment has processing capabilities, such as expanding multiple signal sources and acquiring signals at different locations simultaneously. More advanced processing capabilities include real-time modification of the signal source, such as changing the video signal from one type to another (such as DisplayPort to HD), cropping, up or down scaling (such as changing from HD to 4K or 4K to HD), composition (text overlay or combination of multiple videos) and so on.

In the way of AV over IP system, the structure of traditional AV basically remains. The only difference is that in the past, audio and video signals were transmitted in a circuit-based form through a series of boxes and cables, but now, like computer data networks and IP phones, they are transmitted in packets.

Basically, IP is a set of rules for managing data formats through the Internet or other audio and video networks. AV-over-IP technology organizes audio and video data to make it comply with the rules of IP transmission. The data transmitted through IP is subdivided into data packets. Each data packet contains a part of the original file and other control information, such as signal source, signal destination, and sequence.

IP is different from traditional AV mainly in the following aspects: IP provides more scalable switching possibilities, such as more ports, functional modularity and greater scalability, breaking the barriers of transmission distance, and improving input and output. The ratio surpasses localized video standards, is more closely integrated with data and communication, and even has more video processing options.

The AV over IP system products of Being HD supports no limitation of the receiver quantity in the IP system, and the transmission distance up to 330feet input&output.
